Heating substation design: questions to ask before procurement

A substation design brings together heat supply, space heating, hot water, automation and metering. A review must examine the connections between disciplines as well as individual equipment items.

Loads and initial conditions

Compare connection specifications, the brief, loads and adopted system parameters. If initial information has changed, clarify which disciplines reflect it. Different source document revisions can lead to conflicting solutions even when the drawings are neatly prepared.

Thermal diagram and equipment

Check that the diagram suits the systems and equipment. Heat exchanger, pump and control device parameters need calculation-based justification. Unjustified oversizing or selection based on a single catalogue figure calls for technical discussion.

Thermal and automation interfaces

Compare instrument references, connection diagrams and control functions. An equipment change in the thermal design may require automation changes. Before procurement, establish which decisions are agreed and which questions remain open.

Heat metering and operation

Clarify metering requirements and compare them with the substation arrangement. Check instrument locations and maintenance access. A compact layout on paper is not a substitute for assessing installation, servicing and replacement access.

Specifications, substitutions and review results

Compare equipment schedules across disciplines and clarify supply scope. Alternatives must account for operating parameters, controls, connections and compatibility. Submit the related disciplines, calculations and change list for review, and link observations to the documentation. A design review does not replace installation, commissioning or seasonal preparation of an operating substation.
